In 2021, the Children's Museum & Theatre of Maine relocated to a new, three-story, 30,000 sq. ft. building in the Portland neighborhood of Libbytown. Interactive exhibits at the museum focus on play-based experiences in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math); arts and culture; performing and visual arts; and early childhood education. These include a one-of-a-kind periscopic camera obscura, a stone labyrinth, a giant interactive ball sculpture, an observation beehive, a dress-up theatre, water tables, a teaching garden, a “Meet our Neighbors” gallery, a makerspace, a Maine watershed exhibit, and indoor and outdoor climbing structures. For an additional fee, the theatre regularly presents plays aimed at young audiences in its 100-seat auditorium. The entire Museum & Theatre is ADA accessible.

The recently re-opened Dover Adventure Playground features a life-size flat-bottomed vintage gundalow boat; a net climber; swings and slides; a 3-story Garrison tower; a 1,200 pound, 3x8 foot climbable Alewife granite fish sculpture; a splash pad; musical instruments; and a life-sized “whale's tail” sculpture perched on the roof of the Dover Pool. The building that houses the Institute of Contemporary Art/Boston on Fan Pier is the first in the US designed by the architectural firm of Diller Scofidio + Renfro. The Gardner Museum houses the collection of Isabella Stewart Gardner, a local patron of the arts who died in 1924, in a building she commissioned to look like a 15th century Venetian palazzo. The center of the original building showcases courtyard plantings that reflect the seasons as they evolve throughout the year. In addition to her collection, which remains displayed exactly she arranged it per her will, there are changing exhibitions, concerts, lectures, family events, and an artist-in-residence program. In 2012, the museum opened an addition designed by Renzo Piano that houses a space for their concert series.

The McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Center, located in Concord, NH, is dedicated to the two astronauts who came from the granite state—Christa McAuliffe and Alan Shepard. Opened in 1953, the Ogunquit Museum of American Art has important connections to the famed Ogunquit art colony and American Modernism. The grounds feature a three-acre sculpture park containing 18 small gardens with views of the Atlantic Ocean. Changing exhibits feature works dating from the 1800s up to the present with work by contemporary artists. Visitors (ages 3+) encounter hands-on exhibits covering topics such as forces, light, sound electricity, simple machines and more; daily demonstrations; and the LEGO® Millyard Project (Manchester's Amoskeag Millyard as it might have looked circa 1900—including City Hall and the Notre Dame bridge—and all built with commercially-available LEGO bricks). A seasonally scheduled family workshop on weekends may be attended as a drop-in. A science gift shop is on the premises.

The SEE Science Center is an interactive learning center established to promote the understanding, enjoyment and achievements of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The LEGO® Millyard Project on permanent display. Located in Manchester, NH.

The Library has one pass per day -- allowing 2 free admissions.  

Reservations at the museum are highly recommended -- they will turn away walk-in visitors when we reach capacity. 

SEE is closed some major holidays and in early September for annual renovations. Check their home page news and social media for upcoming closures, including closures for extremely inclement weather.

Strawbery Banke Museum is located in the South End Historic District of Portsmouth, NH, on a 10-acre campus that features more than 37 restored buildings built between the 17th and 19th centuries. Visitors may visit the historic buildings, some with staff in period dress engaged in traditional crafts such as boat-building, coopering, and wood-working; enjoy interactive exhibits about the history of the neighborhood and its preservation; and stroll and appreciate the heritage gardens and orchards, various heirloom breeds, and beehives. Themed centers provide different pathways for understanding the history. A museum store and a couple of restaurants are on the premises.

November/December -- hours change to weekend-only guided tours.

Thanksgiving weekend -- Saturdays, Sundays and the Friday, 90-minute guided tours starting 10 am to 2 pm (last tour starts at 2 pm). Interactive tour "Three Centuries of Thanksgiving" recommended for ages 5 and up.

May through October -- The historic houses are staffed and open for touring 10 am to 5 pm, 7 days a week

This outdoor museum illustrates the rich history of a real neighborhood from the Seventeenth Century to the present. 

The pass normally provides free admission to the museum for (2)two adults and (4)four children (may be different for special events).

The pass also provides admission to Baby Animals, July 4th: An American Celebration, Ghosts on the Banke, New Hampshire Fall Festival, and the Candlelight Stroll.

Created in 1915 with money from a philanthropist interested in promoting history, science and the arts to her fellow Dover citizens, the eclectic Woodman Institute Museum includes a medicinal & industrial garden; the oldest Sycamore tree in Strafford County; and four historic houses filled with artifacts connected to the nation's and Dover's past: The Woodman House (1818), The Damm Garrison House (1675), The John Parker Hale House (1813), and The Keefe House (1825). Of note in the museum's collection is the saddle used by President Abraham Lincoln when he rode to review troops shortly before his assassination. Changing exhibitions of artwork at the Thom Hindle Gallery include works available for purchase.
